IBEW Local 1245’s dated site (ibew1245.com) needed a modern homepage, header, and footer that worked for the roughly 70% of its members who visit on phones implemented within an existing WordPress codebase the union had inherited. Working from a professional designer, I rebuilt the homepage as drag-n-drop ACF Flexible Content sections on a Genesis child theme; restructured the header and footer through Genesis hooks and widget areas; and devised a lightweight events system using post expiration instead of a massive calendar plugin. I had a great time figuring out how to create box-shadow gradients (hint: pseudo-elements!) and do hexagonal masking. The union got a modern, phone-first front door its staff can reorder section by section, with nothing added to the maintenance burden of an already-inherited codebase.
